A Corby drug addict who stole nearly £200 worth of jeans from Next in Phoenix Parkway before assaulting a woman has been ordered to complete a nine-month out-patient drug programme as a punishment.

Robert Mort has dozens of shoplifting convictions going back many years, with a long history of failing to pay fines imposed by the courts and of refusing to comply with court orders.

The 35-year-old of Ripley Walk, Corby, went into Next in Corby in October 2020 and tried to make off with several pairs of jeans. In doing so, he also managed to assault a woman.

He was caught and attended Northampton Magistrates' Court last week where he pleaded guilty to one count of theft and one of assault.

Mort, who has had several previous suspended jail terms, was ordered to complete a nine-month drug rehabilitation order and was ordered to pay £95 as a victim surcharge.

He was also banned from entering Next for two years and a restraining order was granted banning him from contacting two staff members.

Mort regularly targets shops across the town including the BP Garage and Tesco.
