Rushden driver jailed and banned for five years after police chase in town centre

Aaron Fowler has been jailed for 14 months and handed a five-year ban from driving after evading police in Rushden town centre.

Fowler, 32, of no fixed address, was charged in May with driving while disqualified, dangerous driving and driving with no valid third-party insurance after being spotted driving dangerously in a silver Vauxhall van.

Shortly before 9.15am on Friday, May 9, Northamptonshire Police on patrol in Rushden spotted Aaron in Wymington Road.

As he drove towards the High Street he turned into Hall Avenue, stopped, let out the front seat passenger and accelerated off at speed, which prompted police to pursue him.

Fowler ignored a no entry sign at the junction of Duck Street, driving against the flow of traffic in the one-way system, which forced other road users to take evasive action.

Arresting officer, PC Horner of the Roads Policing Team, said: “We see all too often the devastating effects of those who have a total disregard for the sanctions imposed by the courts and continue to drive after being disqualified.

“Aaron Fowler had already had his driving licence revoked as the standard of his driving had put himself and others at risk. To repeat this behaviour by driving against the flow of traffic at excessive speed not only showed a real contempt for the authorities but was also selfish, dangerous, and irresponsible.

“Reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads remains a priority for us and our partners at the Northamptonshire Safer Roads Alliance, and it is always extremely disappointing to see that there are still people who choose to use our roads illegally and irresponsibly.”

Officers parked in Lancaster Gardens and, with the help of police dog, Blue, followed Fowler to a nearby address where he was arrested inside.

He first appeared at Northampton Magistrates Court on May 10 – later adjourned to Tuesday, May 20 – when he pleaded guilty to all three charges.

On July 3 he was sentenced at Northampton Crown Court to 14 months in prison and disqualified from driving for five years and seven months, as well as being ordered to pay £187 victim surcharge.

He will now be unable to drive a car before August 2030.
