Police "not treating as suspicious" body discovered in Northampton woodland

The discovery of a body in a Northampton woodland is not being treated as suspicious by police.

Local detectives drafted in Home Office pathologists after the remains of a man were found in Lings Wood last week (Monday May 4).

Work is continuing in an attempt to identify the body but foul play has been ruled out for now.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said: "We are not treating the discovery of the body in Lings Wood as a suspicious death at this time but we are continuing to investigate the incident and are currently working to establish the person’s identity.”

Police revealed the remains may have laid undiscovered "for some time" before it was found by a member of the public out walking.

Another body uncovered by children during a Wildlife Trust clean-up of the Lings Wood area in 2002 has never been identified despite a cold case review six years ago.

It is believed the remains had been hidden in undergrowth for up to a year.

Experts used a clay model showing what the man's face would have looked like in an appeal for information, but police still drew a blank.
