Police issue warning after increase in rogue trader incidents across Northamptonshire including driving victims to cash point
Police are issuing a warning and advice to residents across Northamptonshire, after an increase in rogue trader incidents.
Northamptonshire Police say rogue traders will often cold call, claim they are working in the area, have materials left over for a cheap job, and can start immediately.
They will claim they have noticed issues regarding a property, for example the roof/tiles/driveway are damaged or in need of repair and then pressure residents into signing up or agreeing to services on the spot.
Police also report that rogue traders sometimes drive the occupant to a cash point or bank to withdraw money.

Daventry Neighbourhood Policing officer - PC Carly Redfern, said: “I have recently visited a victim of a rogue trader who felt pressured into agreeing to work that was both substandard and expensive.
“They had not been provided with a written quote and the price fluctuated once the work commenced.
“Our message is simple - if you are not sure, say ‘no’ and ask them to leave your property. Take advice from family or friends if you have entered an agreement, and make sure there is an agreed cooling-off period.
“I would also encourage people to be vigilant in regard to their neighbours especially if they are elderly or vulnerable and if they see something suspicious to report it to us.”
Police advice against rogue traders
- If someone cold calls at your address and you don’t recognise them, don’t open the door.
- It is ok to say no to a cold caller.
- When looking for work to be completed at your property, obtain at least three quotes before choosing a trader.
- Pay by card, pay in stages, and avoid deposits or upfront payments.
- Only pay for work once fully completed and you are satisfied.
- All reputable companies provide a written quote and a 14-day cooling-off period.
- Ask friends/neighbours for recommendations.
- Never allow a trader to take you to a bank.
- Consider installing smart doorbell or CCTV.
