Police are conducting house-to-house enquiries in Corby today (Monday) after the war memorial in Church Walk was defaced over the weekend.

An expletive was reportedly sprayed on the memorial overnight between Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3, and was found by Corby Royal British Legion's Gareth Price.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said officers are going door-to-door in the local area and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Mr Price posted on Facebook: "Our war memorial has been defaced in the last 24 hours. It’s the first time in its history that this has been done.

"This is no way to treat the memories of people from the town who have fallen in defence of their country.

"Luckily we have been able to clean it off without any damage to the memorial.”

A reporter who visited the scene on Saturday, October 3, said there was no sign of the damage.

Damaging a war memorial is an offence under criminal damage laws, but a bill going through parliament at the moment would make it an offence in its own right with a maximum 10-year prison sentence.

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
