Shocked police found 14-year-old boy carrying a deadly machete during a stop and search in Northampton late on Sunday night.

Officers were alerted when the teenager tried to run away after spotting them on patrol in the Kings Heath area of the town at around 10pm.

He was chased down on foot and searched, when the 18-inch bladed weapon was discovered tucked into his trousers.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police confirmed the 14-year-old has since been charged with possessing a knife in a public place.
