A group of colleagues were moved on by police last night (Wednesday) after they were caught breaking the coronavirus lockdown at a barbecue in Kettering.

Police received "a couple of calls" at about 7pm from members of the public with concerns about a gathering in St John's Road on the Ise Lodge estate.

They deployed officers to the scene and found about 10 work colleagues enjoying a barbecue garden party in the sunshine - something currently prohibited under emergency powers designed to prevent the spread of the killer virus.

The party was broken up and people were moved on.

A police spokesman said: "It’s disappointing to see people continuously flouting these restrictions.

"They’ve been put in place to protect people and the NHS."

Earlier today the force's chief constable Nick Adderley instructed his police officers to enforce the coronavirus regulations and take action, in the way of fines and arrests, when needed.

Up until this point the force was working on the basis of engaging with the public, but he said that ‘period of grace’ is now over.

The move comes after an increasing number of people were calling for stronger action from the police dealing with those who are continuing to flout the Government guidelines.

Many people were angry that no fines had been issued.
