Northamptonshire Police is urging all road users and pedestrians to think road safety ahead of the clocks going back one hour this Sunday (October 25), signalling the return of darker mornings and evenings.

There is often an increase in road collisions on the UK’s roads at this time of year with darker mornings and early evenings. Officers are urging those who are usually out walking, cycling or driving at these times to take extra care.

This timely reminder has been issued as part of the Force’s road safety campaign, ‘Operation Journey’, which aims to reduce the number of people who are killed or seriously injured on Northamptonshire’s roads.

So far this year, 19 people have been killed in collisions across the county. Last year, the figure was 42 - the highest number of road collision related deaths recorded in eight years.

Head of Operation Journey, Superintendent Tom Thompson of Northamptonshire Police’s Operations Team, said:

“With longer hours of darkness and winter weather, we would urge all road users to look out for pedestrians and cyclists. While we would ask those walking, running or cycling to wear bright or reflective clothing and have lights fitted to their bikes.

“Road safety is all of our responsibilities, and we would ask road users to think of their actions and modify their driving to cope with winter conditions. Similarly, pedestrians and cyclists need to be seen!”

Northamptonshire Police have advised pedestrians, runners and dog walkers to stick to well-lit areas and routes they are familiar with, wear light colours and reflective/high visibility jackets when walking on a foggy day or at night and to stay alert by not listening to music or wearing earphones.

They have also advised people to ensure their phone is charged and to not be distracted by texting as this could attract thieves. Pedestrians additionally need to bear in mind that it takes drivers longer to stop in wet or slippery conditions.

Cyclists have been advised to also wear light colours and reflective clothing as well as an approved cycle helmet. They must always check their tyres, lights and reflectors on their bikes before they set off.

Motorists have been advised by police to ensure all lights on their vehicles are working, the tyres have sufficient tread, the tyres are inflated to the correct pressure, the windscreen washer bottle is full, the wipers are working, the engine cooling system is topped up with anti-freeze and the vehicle windows are clear of ice and mist before starting a journey.
