Simon Edens, outgoing deputy chief constable of Leicestershire Police, was approved by members of the Police and Crime Panel after being put forward by Police and Crime Commissioner, Adam Simmonds.
Introducing Mr Edens to the panel, Mr Simmonds said today was an ‘important day and the start of a new chapter for Northamptonshire Police’: “He is a formidable leader with the character and strength to take the Force forward and to reform policing. He understands the vision of Northamptonshire Police and has the ability to make that vision real.”
Mr Edens told the committee: “I’ve seen across the Force a real passion and determination to make a difference to people and I want to be part of that. The ambition to be the safest county in the country is a motivating, invigorating and energising one and one which I also want to be a part of.”
He added: “The PCC and I have already developed the start of what will be a very productive and positive working relationship. We have similar ambitions and sense of vision for the service, but I will lead the Force and work very closely with the PCC and his team.”

Mr Edens was chosen after a lengthy and rigorous appointment process which, among other things saw the Force hold a Question Time-style event in which the four shortlisted candidates were quizzed by officers and staff, the first such event of its kind in the country.
Mr Edens took a range of questions from panel members on a range of subjects, from partnership working, social media and community engagement to domestic violence and police morale.
