A 74-year-old man was kicked, punched and hit with a metal pole while sitting on a bench in Market Street, Wellingborough.

The incident happened between 2.45pm and 3pm on Monday (August 31) when the man was approached by a group of people as he sat on a bench outside the Swansgate Centre and assaulted by a man and woman.

A spokesman for Northants Police said: "The woman, who was holding a Rottweiler dog, kicked him in his shin before the man she was with, struck him on the back with a metal pole, kicked his legs and punched his head."

The woman is described as white and in her 40s, and was wearing a black top, black bottoms and black trainers and was holding a dog.

The man was also white and his 40s, with short black hair which was balding on top. He was wearing a black top, black jeans and glasses.

The police spokesman added: "It is believed the town centre would have been busy on Monday as it was a bank holiday, and officers would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed this incident."
