A member of the public saw the man take the light-coloured Staffordshire Bull Terrier out of his white van, dump it and run it over before speeding off.

After a social media post about the incident, volunteers searched through the night for the injured dog before it was found this morning.

It was left with lacerations to its head, legs and back and taken to a vet.

A police spokesman said they found a "vehicle of interest" in Lerwick Way and they are currently examining it.
