Shocked railway staff watched as a knife-wielding man threatened a member of the public at Northampton train station on Wednesday.

A man in his 50s was arrested by British Transport Police officers on suspicion of racially abusing a member of staff at the station, criminal damage and possession of a pointed or bladed article.

BTP, which is responsible for policing railways in England and Wales, confirmed the suspect has since been released but investigations are still ongoing.

A BTP Northamptonshire spokesman said: "British Transport Police were called to Northampton railway station at 2.01pm on Wednesday October 14 following reports of an abusive male.

"Officers attended and a man in his fifties was arrested on suspicion of racially abusing a member of railway staff, threatening a member of the public, criminal damage and possession of a pointed or bladed article.

"He has since been released but remains under investigation."
