A man who grabbed a female officer in front of sick patients in the middle of a busy emergency department has been ordered to pay compensation to her.

Two police officers, including the female victim, were in Northampton General Hospital's A&E department with another prisoner when Adam Johnson was brought in by an ambulance on April 24 last year.

Prosecuting at Northampton Magistrates' Court, Julie Costello, said the 47-year-old defendant spotted them.

"He started making reference to hating the police and wanting to fight them," she said.

"He kept walking towards them in a fighting stance.

"He kept coming too close and the officer used her right hand to push him away."

Johnson, of Spencer Parade, Northampton, admitted the offence when he appeared before magistrates on Thursday (September 24).

Ms Costello said that the police officers' prisoner was also becoming agitated on seeing the defendant's behaviour. Johnson continued to swear at the officers and repeatedly offered to fight them.

Eventually, Johnson grabbed the officer's shoulder and her colleague was forced to spray him with PAVA spray to bring him under control.

He offered no explanation for his crime in court.

Magistrates, who warned him that he could go to prison if he ever committed a similar offence, ordered him to complete an 18 month community order including a six month alcohol treatment order.

He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £85, costs of £85 and compensation of £100 to the officer.
