Magistrates sentenced him to a community order with 150 hours of unpaid work.

French, of Athelstan Road, must also pay the police officer he attacked £100 in compensation.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: “Craig French’s actions that night were completely unacceptable.

“Our police officers do not come to work to be assaulted and it is never and should never be seen as ‘a part of the job’.

“Northamptonshire Police will always pursue action against those people who injure or attack any of our officers and we hope French reflects on his behaviour that night in order to make better life choices in the future.”

Magistrates also ordered French to pay court costs of £85 and a surcharge to fund victim services of £90.
