A Kettering man who assaulted a police officer has been fined by magistrates and ordered to pay compensation.

Sean Riordan was in Edmund Street, where he lives, when he attacked the constable at about midnight on July 5 this year.

The 38-year-old was arrested after grabbing the officer by the side of his neck and kicking his leg.

At Northampton Magistrates' Court this week Riordan admitted assaulting an emergency worker.

Magistrates fined him fined £80 and ordered him to pay his victim £50 in compensation.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: "Police officers go to work to fight crime and protect people.

"They are the ones running towards danger while the rest of us run away.

"They do not deserve to be assaulted - it is not “part of the job” and never will be.

"We hope Riordan reflects on his behaviour in order to make better choices in the future."

Riordan must also pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £34.
