Northamptonshire Police have issued a stark warning about buying cars after revealing a local victim's £20,000 dream motor turned out to be stolen.

The happy motorist found a sparkling Land Rover Discovery Sport on Facebook but dealers broke the news it had been pinched from somewhere in London after they took it in for a service.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police revealed: "The chassis numbers had been tampered with to make it appear genuine.

"This vehicle will be returned to its owner while the buyer will now be left with no car!

"Please make thorough checks before buying any car! Check the chassis numbers on the windscreen, and the on-board computer to confirm they match."
