The girl was walking along Whiteford Drive at about 3.30pm when the dog approached her from behind.

A police spokesman said the dog appeared to be wandering around without an owner and did not appear to have a collar.

They added that the dog tried to get the girl's attention and the girl continued walking without engaging with the dog.

Shortly after, the dog bit the girl causing a puncture wound to one of her fingers.
