Extra police patrols in Northampton town centre after death of India Chipchase

More officers than usual will be on patrol during Friday and Saturday night to provide reassurance people in the town centre and speak to any potential witnesses who could help with the investigation into India’s death.

Superintendent Chris Hillery, from Northamptonshire Police, said: “India went missing while on a night out last weekend in what was an incredibly rare incident in Northampton and I want to take this opportunity to send my condolences to her family and friends.

“Her tragic death has caused a lot of concern for people in the town and across the county, and I want to reassure people that we take their fears seriously.

“There will be extra officers in the town centre on Friday and Saturday night to provide a visible reassurance but also to be on hand to speak to anyone who may have any concerns or information that will assist the investigation.”

Edward Tenniswood, aged 51, of Stanley Road, Northampton, has been arrested and charged in connection with India’s murder and is due to appear at Northampton Crown Court tomorrow.

Supt Hillery said: “I don’t want to speculate on what happened last weekend as there in an on-going investigation which I don’t want to prejudice.

“However, we want people to be able to visit our town centres and enjoy themselves so I do want to take this opportunity to remind people of some useful personal safety tips.

“Look after each other while out. Keep together and in close contact

“Drink responsibly and stick together

“Plan ahead and organise your transport home before going out - always use a licensed cab or taxi or get a lift with a friend or family member

“If you see anyone acting suspiciously or see something out of the ordinary while on a night out call police on 101

“We work closely with partners and licensed premises to keep our town centres as safe as possible and will continue to do so.

“We are committed to making Northamptonshire the safest place in the country and that includes making people feel safe while they’re out in our town centres at night.”
