A driver has been spared jail after being caught behind the wheel in Northampton just hours after being banned for drink-driving.

Magistrates disqualified Adam Sleszycki, of the Drapery, for 23 months at a hearing on Saturday morning (October 10) after he admitted crashing his car into a house while over the limit.

But the 24-year-old car mechanic was stopped by police in a black BMW just SIX HOURS later in Victoria Promenade in the town.

Neil Hollett, prosecuting, told the court on Monday (October 12): "The defendant was stopped by police while driving at about 4.55pm on October 10.

"The time is significant because enquiries by the officers revealed the defendant had been disqualified that very same day by this court for a period of 23 months."

The court was told that Sleszycki had gone home after being convicted on Saturday but then noticed his family — his partner and two young children — had run out of all food supplies.

He had no money left to take public transport to travel to his employers and get money he was owed so he felt he had no choice but to get in the car because he did not want to see his family without food.

Sleszycki pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and the court heard he was "afraid" after being told he could get up to a 12-week custodial sentence.

He said his family had come to England from Poland one year ago seeking a better life but was now scared his family could be made homeless as he was the only one earning money while his partner looked after the children.

Sleszycki was initially charged with dangerous driving after his Seat Altea wrecked the porch of a house in Lake View back in April.
