A police spokesman said: "The driver tried to make off from the scene but police were there to stop him."

The 54-year-old man is in police custody.

The crash caused a fire in the property's garden which destroyed a greenhouse and caught the attention of neighbours.

Eyewitness Sarah Frankham was at home watching television when she said she noticed "big black smoke" outside and went to have a look.

She said: "A car had crashed into the garden wall of a neighbour and burst into flames.

"I understand that the car crashed through the roundabout and into a garden wall."

There was no structural damage to the house.
