A disqualified driver escaped jail after fleeing from a hit-and-run following a police chase through Northampton.

Northampton Magistrates' Court heard Jack Douglas Kirton, aged 29, failed to stop for officers after being spotted behind the wheel of a black Nissan Juke in Kingsthorpe on April 23 last year.

He crashed into a Vauxhall Astra outside Asda supermarket in Harborough Road before finally stopping a few hundred yards away in Osbourne Road.

Reports at the time revealed police used a helicopter to help track down the offender following the incident at around 3pm on April 23.

Kirton, of Drayton Walk, Northampton, was sentenced to six months in jail, suspended for two years, after admitting a series of traffic offences including driving while disqualified, causing an accident and having no insurance.

He was also also charged with possession of a quantity of cannabis and ordered to to 120 hours unpaid work.

Magistrates disqualified Kirton from holding a driving licence for a further three years and ordered him to pay a £122 surcharge to fund victim services plus costs of £85.
