It should have been a happy late-spring scene: a group of pals enjoying the sunshine in Corby with a kickabout.

But this is April 2020, and as local people have struggled with having to contact their loved ones through a comouter screen, with staying at home as much as possible, with having to homeschool their children, this bunch of fools decided to flout the lockdown with a game of football.

They were filmed yesterday evening (Friday, April 24) in the football area at the park in Shetland Way, opposite Medina Road, which has been closed on safety grounds for the past month to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

Police eventually arrived to break up the party after local residents had tried their best to get the men to go home.

The extent of the spread in Corby is unknown, but it is known that there have been several deaths of people from the town and 85 in total at nearby Kettering General Hospital.

There have been 966 diagnosed and confirmed cases in Northamptonshire since the outbreak began.

Local people on social media reacted with fury at the group’s blatant disregard for the rules, which came just a day after Northants Police Chief Constable Nick Adderley revealed there had been 114 lockdown tickets issued to people breaking emergency Covid-19 laws.
