When the 26-year-old, of Carltonwood Close, was arrested he denied everything. Through a series of delays, it took two years to charge him.

He pleaded not guilty the following month before finally admitting his crime in April this year. He was on a suspended sentence at the time after previously being convicted of a domestic assault.

The court heard the young victim felt ashamed at what had happened and blamed herself.

Arguing the case for a suspended sentence Liam Muir, mitigating, said: "There is a realistic prospect of rehabilitation here.

"This is a young man who has never had offences of this type before."

But judge Rebecca Crane said Blundell's crime was so serious prison was the only option.

Blundell was sentenced to four years in prison. He will spend half in custody with the remainder on licence.

He will be on the register for sex offenders indefinitely and has been banned from unsupervised contact with girls under the age of 16 for 10 years.
