CCTV cameras could be installed in two Kettering parks in a bid to deter crime.

Kettering Council has launched a consultation over plans to put 24-hour monitored CCTV in areas of the Pleasure Park off Park Road and nearby North Park.

The council is currently working with the county's police and crime commissioner to reduce crime and disorder in the All Saints ward and the neighbouring area.

Last month two men were remanded in custody after a stop and search found class A drugs near the Pleasure Park.

A council spokesman said: "We would like to consult with residents and seek their views on the proposal of the new cameras to deter crime and aid in securing arrests and convictions for criminal activity."

Recently released crime statistics showed the number of reported crimes in the All Saints ward had increased by 12 per cent year-on-year, up from 796 in 12 months to 893.

The number of crimes classed as 'violence against the person' has increased by 30 per cent with public disorder doubling and criminal damage up by almost 60 per cent.

Kettering resident Fran Sherbourne is against the move, branding it "lazy and intrusive".

She said: "Money would be much better spent on a community officer placed at the park.

"This is lazy and intrusive on the residents and anyone else wanting to take a relaxing stroll in our park.

"I don’t want to be watched when I need to relax in nature."

The consultation runs until November 6 this year.
