The RSPCA is appealing for information after the body of a pregnant dog was dumped in a pond.

A 13-year-old made the horrific discovery on Sunday at a pond near the old airfield in Desborough and a member of the public retrieved the body and took the dachshund to a nearby vets and alerted the RSPCA.

The poor dog, which had been wrapped in a towel and placed in a bag before she was submerged in the pond, was found to be pregnant with a fully formed puppy inside.

Her teats were also producing milk and the vet was concerned that she may have already had some puppies before her death.

It is believed the dog was dead at the time she was placed in the pond but her cause of death is not known and the fact her body was dumped in this way has raised suspicions.

RSPCA animal rescuer Inspector Beckie Harlock is now appealing for information to find out who is responsible and is asking anyone who recognises the dog to get in touch.

A microchip was found on the dog which indicated she had been imported from Budapest in April but the owners’ details were traced to an address in Nottingham - however this was not up to date.

Beckie said: “We are not sure at this stage how this poor dog died but the vet believes it was not from drowning.

But what I can’t understand is why go to such lengths to get rid of the body - that does raise suspicions.

“She was wrapped in a towel and put in a bag and then taken to a pond is in a quiet location

“She was producing milk from her teats. They were also concerned that she may have already had some of the puppies she was pregnant with before she died.

“I would speculate that perhaps she had been stolen and then she died - but we don’t know how - and then was callously dumped in this way.

“I am appealing to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area at the time to get in touch but I am also keen to trace anyone who recognises the dog and can identify who she belonged to to get in touch.

“She was wearing a distinctive pink collar which may help someone identify her.”.
