The group - four in their late teens - was then located by police in the St Osyths Lane area, near the Co-op, and armed officers were sent to the scene.

A police spokesman said: "Thankfully the ‘firearm’ didn’t turn out to be a gun at all but was an unloaded air rifle.

"Words of advice were given to the young people in question and no offences were recorded."
