Police said that when they entered a house Horn became verbally aggressive and grabbed hold of one officer's radio.

But in the struggle he caused a cut to the officer's chin which left him needing medical treatment at Kettering General Hospital.

Horn also broke the officer's radio, rendering it unusable, and then attempted to assault another officer.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: “Assaults against our officers are disgraceful and we will always pursue action against those who commit them.

“Being assaulted is not part of the job and never will be.

"Our officers go to work to protect the public and do not deserve to be assaulted in the line of duty.”

At Northampton Magistrates' Court Horn admitted assaulting one police officer, occasioning actual bodily harm, attempting to assault another officer and criminal damage.

Magistrates handed him an 18-week prison sentence - but decided to suspend it for 12 months.

He must take part in rehabilitation activities and complete 80 hours of unpaid work, as well as paying the officer he left in hospital compensation of £250.

Horn was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a surcharge to fund victim services of £128.
