An 80mph police chase nearly ended in disaster as a speeding car skidded off a road and wound up a few feet from a house in Northampton late last night.

The Audi A6 raced off after failing to stop for officers from the Northampton Response Team in Wellingborough Road, ignoring red lights in a bid to escape.

But the pursuit ended when the driver skidded in Fishponds Road, Little Billing, careered across a grass verge and ended up yards from a house.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: "The vehicle travelled at up to 80mph ignoring the 30mph limit before the driver slid on the road and crashed.

"The driver made to run away but our officer chased him down."

A 28-year-old man was this morning in custody after being arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and other motoring offences.
