A teenager is in a critical condition in Birmingham Children's Hospital following a crash in Northampton late on Tuesday night.

The 15-year-old was injured after a Citroen Saxo smashed into a block of flats in Blackthorn Road at around 10.50pm.

Police believe the driver may have fled after the crash and the Serious Collision Investigation Unit has launched an appeal for information.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said: "The Saxo travelling in the direction of Cherry Lodge Road when, for unknown reasons, it left the carriageway near to the junction of Flintcombe Rise and collided with a block of flats in Hanover Court.

"A 15-year-old boy was seriously injured and is currently in a critical condition at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

"The police investigation is in its early stages but at this time, the driver of the vehicle has yet to be established.

"Someone was seen running away from the scene and officers are encouraging this person to come forward as they may be able to assist them with their enquiries."
