Prolific Corby thief walked into Kettering Sainsbury’s with a knife and threatened worker

A man who has a long history of shoplifting took a knife into a Kettering supermarket and walked out with a bottle of vodka.

Robert Terry Gray has a long history of dishonesty offences with multiple shoplifting offences on his record as well as the theft of the proceeds of a charity collection from a bank last year.

And the 55-year-old has now been given a jail term after he walked into Sainsbury’s in Rockingham Road, Kettering, and threatened a member of staff with a knife.

The incident took place on July 17 this year when Gray, of Newark Drive, Corby, stole a bottle of vodka and was challenged by the staff member.

He was at Northampton Crown Court for sentence after he admitted two charges of theft and one of threatening a person with a knife.

The court also heard that on the same day Gray, formerly of Kettering, stole a bottle of whisky in similar circumstances from the Premier Store just a few metres away from Sainsbury’s.

He had denied a further charge of threatening a shopkeeper in Premier, which it was not deemed in the public interest to prosecute, so it was left to lie on file.

His Honour Judge William Harbage sentenced Gray 15 months in prison. He will serve half before being released to spend the remainder of his jail term on licence.
