North Northants homeowners turn to solar as residents look to beat rising energy costs

Homeowners across North Northamptonshire are increasingly turning to solar panels and battery storage as they seek protection from rising and unpredictable energy costs, according to a local energy installation company.

With experts warning that household electricity prices are unlikely to return to the low levels seen in previous years, many residents are now investing in renewable energy systems to reduce their dependence on the grid and take greater control of their household outgoings.

Local installer Genr8 Energy Ltd says demand for domestic solar and battery systems has continued to grow, with more households viewing renewable technology as a long-term financial investment rather than simply an environmental choice.

Solar Becoming Mainstream

Solar panels are now a common sight on rooftops across the county, with many homeowners attracted by the prospect of generating their own electricity and cutting monthly bills.

Industry estimates suggest that a well-designed solar and battery system can now pay for itself in around six to ten years, depending on household usage and installation size.

As most modern panels continue producing electricity efficiently for 25 years or more, homeowners can benefit from many years of reduced energy costs once the initial investment has been recovered.

Existing Solar Owners Upgrading with Batteries

It is not only first-time buyers driving the trend. A growing number of households who installed solar panels in previous years are now adding battery storage to existing systems in order to make better use of the electricity they generate.

Without battery storage, much of the electricity produced during the day may be exported back to the grid while residents are out of the home. By storing surplus energy for later use, batteries allow households to utilise more of their own generation during the evening when demand is typically highest.

Battery storage can also enable homeowners to take advantage of cheaper overnight electricity tariffs, charging batteries during off-peak periods for use the following day.

Helping to Power Electric Vehicles

The rise in electric vehicle ownership is also contributing to increased demand.

Homeowners with EVs are increasingly seeking solar and battery systems that allow them to charge their vehicles using self-generated electricity—significantly reducing motoring costs when compared with petrol, diesel, or peak-rate grid charging.

For many households, the ability to power both the home and a vehicle from solar generation is seen as a major factor in improving overall return on investment.

In addition to reducing household bills, homeowners can also earn money by exporting unused electricity back to the grid through Smart Export Guarantee tariffs.

This means that once the system has paid for itself, it can continue generating both savings and income for many years thereafter.

Local Expertise Meeting Growing Demand

Founded in 2019, Gener8 Energy Ltd has delivered renewable energy projects across domestic, residential and commercial properties throughout the region.

The Northamptonshire company says awareness among homeowners has shifted considerably, with more people now recognising solar and battery storage as a practical response to long-term energy market uncertainty. With pressure on household budgets continuing and electric vehicle adoption on the rise, solar technology appears set to play an increasingly prominent role on rooftops across North Northants in the years ahead.
