A 47-year-old from Corby has been killed in a crash on the A43 Stamford Road.

The victim has been named locally as Joe Rooney, 47, of Stanion Lane, known across the town as Gypsy Joe.

His passenger, a 35-year-old woman, who the Northants Telegraph is not naming, was taken to University Hospital Coventry in a serious condition. Today, her condition has been described as stable.

Police attended the scene on Stamford Road at about 3.25pm yesterday (Sunday, October 25) after the black Audi A8, travelling from the direction of Stanion toward Geddington, crossed on to the opposite side of the road and collided with a tree.

Mr Rooney was declared dead on the scene.

His family has been informed.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the collision. Anyone with information can call police on 101.
