Both Corby and Kettering Magistrates’ Court were included on a list released in July of dozens of courts which could be closed across the nation.

A delegation from the court, Corby and East Northants MP Tom Pursglove and Minister for the Courts Shailesh Vara met last week to discuss how courts will be run in the future.

Chairman of the bench Terry Knights feels the court is a vital local service.

He said: “We presented our views on the continued importance of local justice and endeavoured to propose positive ideas about the future organisation of Magistrates’ Courts to the Minister.

“In particular, we were keen to emphasise why we believe Corby Magistrates’ Court needs to remain open.

“We see the court as a vital local service for the growing population of Corby and north Northamptonshire.

“However, the minister prefers to encourage the use of more video links from public buildings, although he has yet to approach the owners of such buildings to establish whether they would be prepared to facilitate this.”
