Corby joins road safety pledge

Corby Council is working with the Corby Neighbourhood Policing Team and Northamptonshire Fire Service to support the Project Edward.

Project Edward is a European road safety campaign overseen by Tispol (European Traffic Network).

It involves the public sign-up to a road safety pledge, encouraging the public to think about improving one aspect of their driving behaviour.

There is also a campaign message of achieving zero fatalities for the day.

Sgt Jon Hodgson of the Corby Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “It is vitally important that we all play our part in reducing road death and injuries on our roads.

“We all have a part to play whether that is not speeding, driving whilst tired and making sure our vehicles are fit for the road.

“Not only as drivers, but as other road users, we all have our part.

“It is our responsibility to ensure that we can move around the roads, without risk of being injured. That is why I support Project Edward.”

A public event will take place this Friday (September 21) between 1pm and 3pm at Tesco Extra in Oakley Road, Corby, where members of the public are invited to talk to partners about safer driving and to sign up to the pledge.

Mayor of Corby Cllr Mohammed Rahman, who has signed up to the pledge, said: “Attitudes towards driving can often become complacent and we hope that this campaign brings a clear safety message to the forefront of all drivers’ minds. “Campaigns like these are vital to ensure we remind ourselves to be responsible road users at all times and what the consequences can be if we are not.”

Fire Service station commander, David Smith said: “Deaths and injuries on the road affect not just the individual – the lives of families can be destroyed by losing a loved one, or changed forever by having to care of a family member with life-changing injuries.

“Corby Green Watch are working with a number of local partners to promote Project Edward as part of a multi-agency event, these include Northamptonshire Police and Corby Council.”
