Boxing stars coming to Wellingborough to support Gerry Gent's fight against cancer

Gerry Gent of Wellingborough is just seven-months-old, but he has already been through major surgery since being diagnosed with the rare cancer.

Family and friends are rallying round Gerry and his parents, including a fundraiser held at Gleneagles Social Club in Wellingborough last month.

And the support is set to continue as Niamh’s Next Step, the charity launched in memory of Niamh Curry who died from neuroblastoma in May 2012 aged just five, has lined up boxing stars Ricky Burns and Kevin Mitchell for an event at The Cutting Room in Wellingborough.

Niamh’s dad Chris Curry of Wellingborough said: “Niamh’s Next Step along with Sporting Gold and Cutters Wellingborough are doing a special night with current boxing world champion Ricky Burns and former British and Commonwealth champion Kevin Mitchell to raise money and awareness for little Gerry Gent.

“It’s nice to be able to do something for the family, and this night is specifically to raise money for Gerry’s journey.”

When Chris and wife Sam heard that a family just round the corner from where they live is facing something similar to what they went through with their youngest daughter Niamh, they just wanted to help.

As well as helping organise this event and trying to raise money for the family, they have also been at the end of the phone if Gerry’s parents want to talk. 
Chris said tickets for the event from 7pm until late on Thursday, March 16, are selling well, but they really want it to be a sell-out so they can do as much as possible for Gerry and his family.

And he added: “It’s going to be a great night.”

All tickets include a professional photo, food, question and answer session and entertainment.

Standard tickets are available for £30.

VIP tickets are also available for £40, which includes early entry and front-of-house seating.

Neuroblastoma affects about 100 children each year in the UK and is most common in children under the age of five.
