Barefoot in Mauritius: the luxury wellness retreat grounded in nature

Jane Wilson discovers a fresh way to wellness

Nature is the guiding philosophy at Heritage Le Telfair Golf and Wellness Resort in Mauritius, where wellness begins not in the spa but outdoors amongst the ocean, forests and volcanic landscapes of the island. Sun, sea, earth and clean air are the real foundations of wellbeing, according to the resident yogi doctor at the resort. “It begins with reconnecting to the natural elements.”

Set on the south western coast of Mauritius within the Domaine de Bel Ombre, Heritage Le Telfair Golf and Wellness Resort makes that philosophy feel effortless. The Indian Ocean rolls beside tropical gardens while volcanic mountains rise in the distance. White low-rise buildings blend softly into the landscape, linked by arched bridges crossing illuminated waterways. It feels calm, romantic and entirely shaped by nature. My suite, one of 128, overlooked flower beds and riverbanks from a wide balcony which blurred the boundary between indoors and out. Inside, soft beige tones and classical styling created a calm and elegant retreat, though it was the surrounding scenery which constantly drew the eye.

Wellness here stretches far beyond a spa treatment list. Hidden among tropical gardens, the Wellness Sanctuary spans 2,500 square metres with treatment rooms, outdoor suites, meditation spaces and a vitality pool. Yet many of the experiences happen outside where nature itself becomes part of the therapy. During my stay hotel therapists guided Tai Chi and Yin Yoga beneath swaying palms while sunset yoga unfolded in the silhouette of the Château de Bel Ombre as fading gold light swept across the estate. Pilates and meditation sessions took place on a dedicated platform within the gardens. One evening, singing bowls hummed beside the ocean while the sea rippled gently in the background during a sound healing meditation session. The warmth of the evening air, the solitude and the rhythm of the waves created a deeply calming experience.

The treatments also reflect the island’s multicultural roots. I chose the signature Mauritian Massage, which blends techniques influenced by the cultures that have shaped the island over centuries. The Shanti Abhyanga Massage, performed using warm coconut oil and centuries old Ayurvedic techniques, is also popular. For guests seeking a more holistic approach, chakra balancing sessions are accompanied by chirping birds and palms rustling in the breeze as breathing techniques and meditation work to restore balance and calm.

Nutrition consultations are also available and the wellness philosophy extends naturally into the restaurants. Breakfasts at Annabella’s became leisurely tastings of tropical fruits, smoked marlin, local honey, multigrain breads and coloured smoothies. Dining at Le Château de Bel Ombre, the elegant 19th-century plantation house, has become one of the island’s most celebrated restaurants, with chandeliers illuminating intimate dining areas overlooking manicured lawns. Dishes celebrated the island’s multicultural influences through giant local prawns, red snapper with candied lemon and wild boar filet mignon. The wine cellar alone houses more than 1,200 bottles. At the ocean’s edge, Le Palmier served standout gambas ceviche with pineapple salsa and lemongrass broth while Gin'Ja focuses on refined Pan Asian cuisine.

Beyond the resort, nature dominates this part of Mauritius. The Bel Ombre Nature Reserve, owned by the hotel group and part of a UNESCO recognised biosphere reserve, offers forest bathing, meditation walks and guided trails through dense indigenous forest. Walking barefoot through the reserve became one of the most memorable moments of my trip. Bamboo leaves waltzed overhead while waterfalls thundered somewhere in the distance and the scent of wet earth lingered heavily in the humid air. Deer moved quietly through the undergrowth while unfamiliar animal tracks pressed into the mud beneath tangled tree roots. At one point, I found myself hugging a tree to capture the stillness and stature of the surroundings. It was grounding. Modern life rarely allows this kind of quiet.

Nearby Chamarel is best known for its Seven Coloured Earth, where the region’s volcanic minerals have created surreal ripples of coloured sands formed millions of years ago and where the coffee plantation offers tours charting the journey from bean to cup alongside cocoa, vanilla, turmeric and tropical fruits grown in the rich volcanic soil. The village is also home to the island’s oldest church, built in 1806, while The Chamarel Restaurant pairs sweeping panoramic views with excellent Creole influenced cuisine.

Back at Heritage Le Telfair, luxury comes easily. There is beachfront dining, an adult only area, endless ocean views, two golf courses and a Marine Education Centre where biologists lead conservation tours. High quality comes with recognition. La Réserve Golf Links has been voted the best golf course in the Indian Ocean.

Yet beyond the polished service and elegant surroundings, what stayed with me most was the overwhelming connection to nature. By the end of my stay, I understood exactly what the yogi doctor meant. Wellness is not always found in complicated treatments or punishing routines. Sometimes it begins far more simply with sunlight on skin, bare feet on earth, the sound of waves and finally having the space to breathe properly again. And, occasionally, by hugging a tree.
