All six had either tested positive for Covid-19 within the previous 28 days or had the virus mentioned on a death certificate.

Today's sad news takes the total to 72 deaths among coronavirus patients at the county's two acute NHS Trusts — 45 at Northampton and 27 at Kettering — since early October.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak today promised a pay rise for NHS doctors and nurses next year but announced a pay freeze for other public sector workers "to protect jobs."

The number of Covid-positive patients currently being treated in the two hospitals stood at 133 by Thursday of last week and bosses expect that number to continue rising at least well into next week.

Infection rates in the county are beginning to all following a drop in daily numbers of positive tests released by the Government. But such improvements take time to be reflected in hospital admissions.

Yesterday saw 143 positive tests added to the county total according to Government figures — compared to 194 the previous Tuesday.

Covid-19 was already linked to 311 deaths in Northampton and 220 in Kettering between March and August.
