Remembering 1,400 who have died across Northamptonshire's neighbourhoods a year on from first lockdown
Prince Charles will lead minute's silence at noon followed by doorstep vigil at 8pm
The Prince of Wales will lead a minute's silence at noon today as Northamptonshire joins the rest of Britain in a day of national reflection, remembering those who have died during the coronavirus crisis.
People are also being encouraged to stand on their doorsteps at 8pm tonight with phones, candles or torches to create a "beacon of remembrance" on the first anniversary of lockdown.
The commemoration is organised by the end-of-life charity Marie Curie which estimates more than six million people have been bereaved since the coronavirus pandemic began.
In a recorded message, Charles, who is a patron of the charity, said: "We have all been inspired by the resourcefulness we have witnessed, humbled by the dedication shown by so many, and moved, beyond words, by the sacrifices we have seen.
"Whatever our faith or philosophy may be, let us take a moment together to remember those who have been lost, to give thanks for their lives, and to acknowledge the inexpressible pain of parting.
"In their memory, let us resolve to work for a future inspired by our highest values, that have been displayed so clearly by the people of this country through this most challenging of times."
More than 250 organisations are supporting the day of reflection, including 82 leaders from religious groups and cross-party politicians, care organisations, charities, businesses, emergency services, public sector bodies and community groups.
March 23, 2020, was the day Boris Johnson sent the country into lockdown for the first time.
It was also the day of the third coronavirus-related death in Northamptonshire.
That lockdown lasted nearly three months and was the big hammer to beat Covid-19, slow the spread of the virus, stop the NHS being overwhelmed and prevent unnecessary deaths.
One year on, upwards of 1,400 people with the virus are known to have lost their lives in hospitals and care settings across Northamptonshire, according to the NHS and Office for National Statistics.
These latest ONS figures, up to the end of February, show how many have died in each of the county's 89 neighbourhoods.
