One area of Northamptonshire is nearly Covid-free while case rates tumble in ten more

Health chief's plea to stick to the lockdown rules and keep numbers heading down

Health chiefs have underlined their plea not to bend lockdown laws after official numbers revealed Covid-19 case rates tumbling in parts of the county.

Rural areas in the far south of Northamptonshire around Kings Sutton, Greatworth and Evenly saw fewer than three news cases in the week to February 9.

And another ten areas all have weekly rates of around 100 or less per 100,000 people compared to the England average of 167.5.

The total number of positive tests county-wide has fallen to 1,680 a week from a peak of 5,199 on January 8.

Northants' Director of Public Health admits the figures are "good news" and a "testament to the hard work and determination of our residents.".

But Lucy Wightman also added: "We must work continue to work together to maintain this trend.

"Those who are not sticking to the rules must live within the limits of the law and not to stretch them.

"The rules are there for very good reason there’s science behind them and we can clearly see that when people adhere to them, case rates improve.

"You must not mix inside a household with people you do not live with or people who are not in your childcare or support bubble, it is not allowed. If you are not eligible to have a support bubble or childcare bubble you are not allowed to mix indoors.

"To do otherwise is not just illegal, it’s irresponsible. You will be not only be fined but you will be putting your friends, family and loved ones at risk."

Health experts collate data from testing across England and use it to compare infection rates in different areas. Counties, districts and boroughs are divided up into localities with roughly the same number of people — between 7,000 and 8,000 — called Middle Layer Super Output Areas.

Seven–day rates are expressed per 100,000 population calculated by dividing the weekly count by each area's population and multiplying by 100,000.

An interactive map shows current rates in every neighbourhood accessible by entering a postcode.

If you have Covid-19 symptoms — a high temperature, continuous cough or loss of or change in sense of smell or taste — get tested as soon as possible to confirm if you have the virus or not.

Tests can be booked on the Test and Trace app, online at HERE, or by calling 119.
