Number of Covid-19 cases doubles in just five days in Northamptonshire

The number of known Covid-19 cases in Northamptonshire has more than doubled in just FIVE DAYS.

Public Health England last night revealed 264 people have now tested positive for the novel coronavirus in the county as at 9am yesterday (Friday April 4).

On Sunday, that figure was 126. Some 77 cases have been added in just 48 hours and yesterday's jump of 44 cases in one day is the biggest in the county so far.

Northampton General Hospital's medical director Matthew Metcalfe revealed yesterday that the first batch of more than 100 volunteer medical students and retired doctors who are returning to work have been deployed on the wards to boost the frontline staff.

NHS officials have so far confirmed 28 deaths in Northampton and Kettering hospitals.

Yet the UK epidemic is still not expected to peak for another two or three weeks.

The number of deaths in the UK is set to top 5,000 today while the number known cases in the UK is set to go past 40,000.
