Staff at Northampton hospital have now seen 110 die with another 70 at Kettering

Northamptonshire is closing in on another grim Covid-19 milestone with 180 deaths now recorded at the county's two main hospitals.

NHS chiefs today confirmed four more patients at Northampton General Hospital died after testing positive for the novel coronavirus between April 7 and April 18.

That takes the toll at the Cliftonville site to 110 when the official data was collated at 5pm on Monday (April 20).

Kettering General Hospital also recorded four more deaths, taking the total there to 70 since the outbreak began last month.

Nationwide another 873 people have died in UK hospitals after contracting coronavirus, taking the official toll to 17,408.

The number of reported coronavirus deaths in hospitals appeared to be falling since more than 900 were reported on two consecutive days over Easter.

But this latest jump in deaths is nearly double the previous day's increase of 449 across the UK, which was likely lower because figures tend to drop on Monday due to delays registerations over the weekend.

Official figures from the Department of Health do not include deaths in care homes, hospices and other places outside the county's two acute hospitals.

The Office of National Statistics released its own data today showing that coronavirus-related deaths were 41 per cent HIGHER in England and Wales than the Government's hospital-only figures up to April 10.

Overall, 13,121 deaths involving Covid-19 occurred in England and Wales up to 10 April and were registered by 18 April, compared to the 9,288 people who died in UK hospitals during the same period as reported by the Department of Health.

ONS statistics include all mentions of Covid-19 on a death certificate and deaths in the community — but take much longer to collate. NHS England only include deaths in hospitals where a patient has been tested for the virus.

The Department of Health said there were now 129,044 recorded cases of the virus in the UK after another 4,301 positive results as at 9am yesterday (April 21).

Northamptonshire has seen a total of 904 confirmed cases, 22 more than the day before. The rise in the number of cases locally has slowed since peaking at 79 in one 24-hour period on April 9 and 10.
