KBC confirmed the leaflet was only sent to William Knibb residents. The area covers the town centre and the residential streets between Montagu Street, Stamford Road, St Mary's Road and Windmill Avenue.

In a statement, the council said: "The leaflet was distributed across the William Knibb ward that covers the town centre.

"Our intentions are to repeat this in Barton Seagrave and Burton Latimer this coming weekend and in other areas as and when required."

KBC did not say why specific wards in the borough had been chosen for distribution but the leaflet said "cases are rising in this area".
