Corby steel tubes to be used to build Covid-19 Nightingale hospital beds

Steel tubes made in Corby are to be used to build 500 hospital beds for patients suffering from Covid-19.

The works in Weldon Road is believed to have placed some workers on furlough during the crisis - but for those that remain their work will be vital in the fight against the global pandemic.

Their products are being used by a client to build beds for the huge hospital overspill capacity at London's ExCel centre. The NHS Nightingale facility is being built by medical bosses who are concerned that London's existing ICU capacity will be unable to cope with the growing number of Covid-19 patients expected to seek medical care during the next few weeks.

Yesterday (Thursday, April 2) the total number of people in the UK who have died from the virus stood at 2,921.

A Tata Steel spokesperson said: “While the coronavirus has impacted the our steelmaking operations in the UK, we are still producing products which can be used to help.

“One example is in steel for canned foods while another is in certain construction products which are being used by customers erecting modular emergency medical units.

“The Tata Steel tube mill at Corby is playing its part too supplying product to a customer which is making 500 steel-framed beds for the emergency hospital NHS Nightingale in the ExCeL in East London.

“This is clear demonstration of the continued need for the UK manufacturing sector to remain open and able to operate safely during the current crisis.

“It is excellent that we can contribute to theses essential projects during this time of crisis. It is further evidence of the importance of our products and the work we do here at the Corby." site.”
