Corby records England’s highest jump in positive Covid case rates

One hundred and forty one new positive Covid cases were recorded in Corby today (Tuesday, January 5).

It is the highest single day figure in Corby since the start of the pandemic and means there is now an alarming weekly rate of 720 cases per 100,000 people in the borough.

The weekly rate jumped by 144 per cent today - it was only 576 yesterday (Monday) - making it the highest rate jump in the country.

Corby now has a higher rate than cities like Birmingham and Liverpool and double that of Manchester

According to the latest Public Health England data, there have been a total of 2,191 cases in Corby since March with an astonishing 520 - nearly a quarter - of these confirmed in the past seven days alone.

There were more than 1,000 new cases recorded across the county tonight - the highest ever daily total.

The worrying news came on the first day of a national lockdown aimed at stemming the rise of a new variant of the virus which has already swept through the South East of England.

Because of the time taken to process the tests, figures are from tests taken over the past few days but officially added to the the government tally today.

The figure represents the number of people with at least one positive COVID-19 virus test result.

COVID-19 cases are identified by taking specimens from people and testing them for the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. If the test is positive, this is a referred to as a case. If a person has had more than one positive test they are only counted as one case.

UK data include results from community and hospital tests.
