Storytelling event brings World Book Day to life at Northamptonshire school

To celebrate World Book Day (5th March), pupils from Harlestone Primary School attended a storytelling event organised by David Wilson Homes.
The school, which is located near the developer’s Harlestone Grange development, welcomed expert storyteller Mark Fraser, who delivered a range of stories drawn from his expansive repertoire.
Mrs Kirsten Carpenter, Co-Headteacher at Harlestone Primary School said: “The children listened and watched the storyteller with a real sense of awe and wonder! They were fully immersed in the story telling world and loved the interactive elements where they could become a part of what was happening.
“It was a wonderful experience, capturing the children’s imagination and inspiring them to develop a love of reading.”
World Book Day is an annual celebration focused on promoting reading for fun, as it’s shown to significantly improve children’s future happiness and success. It works to inspire children to see reading as enjoyable and social, offering every child the chance to own a book through tokens donated to schools.
Mark is a traditional storyteller who brings stories to life at many events, schools, museums and heritage sites across the country.
He said: “It was a great privilege to be able to share these wonderful stories with the pupils at Harlestone Primary School. It always amazes me that children will engage, create and be enraptured by storytelling. It is wonderful to see large corporate businesses supporting and encouraging such creativity."
The children experienced first-hand how storytelling has allowed stories to survive and evolve over thousands of years, and across continents.
Jason Hearn, Sales Director at David Wilson Homes South Midlands, said: “We’re delighted to play a part in encouraging children to explore stories and discover the joy of reading. Storytelling has the power to spark imagination and it’s great to see pupils of Harlestone Primary School so engaged and excited by the stories being shared.”
