A Kettering school's landmark staircase challenge has raised more than £1,000 for the NHS to help tack the coronavirus.

Earlier this year 16 members of teaching and support staff at Southfield School in Lewis Road decided they would attempt the Three Peaks Challenge - climbing the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Mount Snowdon) - in 24 hours in the May half-term.

But their challenge was scuppered because of the Covid-19 lockdown, so the school decided to create something the wider school community could do to raise vital cash for the NHS Together Charities COVID-19 Urgent Appeal.

People were urged to choose a global landmark from 25 possible options and then climb its height or go higher in 24 hours on their own stairs or steps.

Options ranged from the Taj Mahal (36m) to Mt Everest (8,848m), and also included landmarks such as Machu Picchu (2,430m) and the Burj Khalifa (828m).

In total close to 100 people of all ages took part and so far they have raised £1,305.

Southfield School's deputy headteacher Gareth Butcher said it was a "fantastic success with so many achieving amazing heights and personal milestones".

He said: "A massive thank you from everyone at Southfield to our wider community for their support."
