He said: "I am really, really happy with my results. They are a lot better than I thought they would be given the news at the moment and with all the uncertainty.

"But they have gone really well and I am so happy."

Dylan Jones got two A*s and an A and will now also be going to Nottingham to study physics and theoretical physics.

He said: "I am delighted that I got the predicted grades that I did and that I got into my first choice university."

Other successful pupils included Jennifer Robinson achieved an two As and a B and will now study politics and modern history at the University of Manchester, and Lana Orbell who after achieving an A, a B and a C is off to Northampton University to study psychology.

Principal Siobhan Hearne said: "At a time where there is so much “noise” surrounding this year’s examination process, the only thing that is important today is our students and celebrating their success.

"Our Year 13 have dedicated the last seven years of their life to this special moment – and it has been a great privilege to share it with them. They should be rightly proud of not only their hard work and effort, but also the courageous and resilient way in which they have managed the last few months. We are deeply proud of them all."

Sixth form assistant principal Kerry Gallon added: "I am thrilled with the achievements of our students. They have received an exceptional set of examination grades and their hard work has been rewarded. Our only sadness today is that they are now leaving us to move on to pastures new!"
