Emma’s interest in radio began at the age of 11, after attending a Corby Radio workshop at Maplefields School. “That experience sparked my passion for broadcasting,” she says. She went on to complete the Corby Radio Academy, gained a day of work experience at Heart FM in Milton Keynes, and joined local community station Beat Route Radio.

She later joined the Global Academy, owned by Global Media, to further develop her skills in radio. Today, Emma is finalising her radio studies in her final year at the University of Bedfordshire, where she manages the student radio station, Radio LaB.

The student radio awards ceremony, hosted by Jordan North and Greg James at the O2 Indigo, celebrated student talent from across the UK. Emma was recognised with four awards: Gold for Joe Lyons’ Best Producer, sponsored by Radio X; Gold for Best News and Journalism, sponsored by Bauer Media; Silver for Best Podcasting, sponsored by BBC Sounds; and Bronze for the Kevin Greening Award for Creativity, sponsored by North Media Talent.

Emma emphasises the importance of access to local and grassroots opportunities. “Early exposure to local radio can inspire young people and help them build successful careers,” she notes. Her achievements highlight how grassroots media can provide valuable experience and support for aspiring broadcasters. She adds “without having Corby Radio work with Maplefields Academy and Beat Route Radio, I wouldn’t have these opportunities”
