Families in Northampton share Christmas joy thanks to Family Action

Families supported by Family Action’s Supportive Steps service came together this week for a special Christmas celebration, bringing festive cheer to those who need it most.
Supportive Steps, in Northampton, held three Christmas parties attended by 40 families to enjoy the season without the financial strain that so many are facing. The children took part in Christmas crafts, family photos, and the parents took home a festive bauble.
New research* commissioned by Family Action reveals the emotional and practical toll of festive financial pressures on parents/carers, with 1 in 6 (15 per cent) saying they can’t afford a gift for their own child and almost a third (32 per cent) think their children will be worried about the cost of Christmas and family finances this year
Family Action’s annual Toy Appeal aims to change that story. By providing gifts to children who might otherwise go without, the appeal restores dignity, lifts pressure from struggling families and brings joy back to Christmas morning.

“Giving out gifts to families that attend our Christmas events and to those we support on a one-to-one basis, brings so much joy. It’s always so unexpected and the look of surprise on the family's faces is lovely,” said Kim Bearman, Supportive Steps Coordinator.
She continued, “the actual meaning goes much deeper than this - it’s a relief for parents that their child is getting some nice toys for Christmas which they might have struggled to provide otherwise, and its love, that for once someone has thought about the parents too.”
One parent said: “Receiving a gift has taken weight off my shoulders financially as all year has been a struggle, [...] it’s a sweet and warm gesture and shows the kindness the group has for their mums, dads and their tiny friends.”
Family Action is urging individuals, businesses and organisations to donate and help bring joy to a child and peace of mind to a parent struggling to make ends meet.
