RS Components to make up to 100 job cuts at Corby site

Corby’s biggest employer is to make 100 more jobs redundant at its flagship UK headquarters.

Sources have told our reporter that the firm, Corby’s biggest employer, announced to staff on Monday morning they were looking to find between 70 and 100 redundancies in the warehouse at Birchington Road.

Staff have said they are concerned that the firm still appears to be taking on agency staff in the same department.

The news comes just eight months after 130 positions were shed at the company. The company’s most recent accounts published in August show annual operating profits fell by 27 per cent to £280m in 2023/24. RS employs 3,161 workers across the UK, with many of them in Corby.

A company spokeswoman said: “We are undertaking an operational review of our Corby distribution centre. We considered several processes and will be offering voluntary redundancy to a number of contracted shift workers. We are in the early stages of our discussions and are unable to comment further until the consultation period is complete.”

Usdaw, which represents RS workers, did not respond to a request for comment.

RS Components was one of the first major businesses to move to Corby to provide jobs for people affected by the mass redundancies of the 1980s when the steelworks closed.

The firm was part of the European Enterprise Zone, given specialist status by Thatcher’s government in 1981, which had business rates exemption for 10 years. Firms could also reclaim capital spending and benefited from a wide-ranging relaxation of planning controls.

There are still members of staff who have worked there for decades and it’s considered a ‘job for life’ by many.
